Power Boat Races 2011 We Mourn Robert Morgan and Jeffrey Tillman
On the first day of the Super Power Boat Races, November 9, 2011, we lost 2 great men. It's a sad, sad, sad day in Key West. We mourn the loss of Robert Morgan and Jeffrey Tillman. My prayers are with their families and team members of Big Thunder Marine Team. I hope and pray the racers will be safe for the next 2 days of racing on Friday and Sunday.
There is a memorial service for Morgan and Tillman at 9 am at the race pits at the Truman Waterfront in Key West FL. Morgan and Tillman hit speeds of 170 mph in August 2011 on Big Thunder in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Super Power Boat Race. They won the race.
Robert Morgan won the Key West Super Power Boat races in 1998 and 2001. The Super Boat Power Boat races are the Indianapolis 500 of the boating world. Morgan's boat wrecked in 1999 and caught fire in 2004.
Big Thunder. a 46 foot catamaran Skater, was on the 3rd lap of the 6.1 mile event when his Super Boat Unlimited class boat caught a little air, skidded on top of the water and then suddenly the tip of the boat lifted and then slammed the massive boat with four 1,200 horsepower engine back wards and slammed upside down on the water. Rescue crew repelled from a helicopter in less than 60 seconds and both men were were rushed to the hospital.
Today marked the 31st anniversary of the annual Super Boat International Key West World Championship Race. There has not been a fatality since 1995 when a racer died and 3 more were injured in separate crashes.
There have been 7 deaths in Key West during the Power Boat Races during the last 27 years. In 1984 the boat Still Crazy crashed and Dick Fullam and Mike Poppa died. In 1985 the boat Jesse James lost Mark Lavin. In 1994 Tom Gentry crashed and went into coma and died years later. In 1995 Jose "Pepe" Fereira died. Power boat racing is a dangerous sport.
Super Boat racer have come from all over the world to compete in the Key West annual event. Teams have come from the Ukraine, Australia and Europe.
Robert Morgan is from Sunrise Beach MO and Jeffrey Tillman is from Kaiser MO. We are all shocked and saddened by the loss of these 2 great men.
